As someone who has been interested in hiking since my university days, books about long-distance trails and wilderness adventures have always caught my attention. My interest grew even stronger after watching Wild, the film starring Reese Witherspoon, based on Cheryl Strayed's memoir about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). I had not read the book, but the film got me curious about the world of long-distance hiking. While researching the PCT, I came across the Appalachian Trail (AT), often described as the “granddaddy of long-distance trails.” That phrase immediately caught my attention. I was fascinated by the idea that a hiking trail could become such an iconic part of outdoor culture, with thousands of kilometres of wilderness connecting mountains, forests, and communities. So, when I came across A Walk in the Woods, I knew I had to get a copy. Bill Bryson's book follows his attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail with his friend Stephen Katz. What makes it enjoyable is the combination of humour, personal observations, and information about the trail's history, ecology, and challenges. Bryson does not portray hiking as a purely romantic adventure. Instead, he highlights the physical demands, unpredictable encounters, environmental concerns, and occasional absurdities that come with spending extended periods in the wilderness. I particularly appreciate how the book balances entertainment with a genuine appreciation for nature. It reminds readers that hiking is not simply about reaching a destination; it is also about experiencing the landscape and understanding what we stand to lose when nature is neglected. For anyone interested in hiking, outdoor adventures, or simply escaping into the wilderness through a good book, A Walk in the Woods is an enjoyable and worthwhile read.
